Support organisations

ACCT is a parent-led support group for children and families affected by Asperger’s syndrome. They run activity groups for children and teenagers with Asperger’s, as well as day trips and other outings. Siblings are welcome too. ACCT hosts weekly drop-in sessions and monthly meetings for parents and carers.

Sheffield Parent Partnership Service (SPPS) provides impartial, confidential information, advice and support to parents/carers of children with special educational needs on all matters relating to their child’s education. There is a statutory duty upon the Local Authority to provide the service but for the service to operate ‘at arm’s length’ from the Local Authority.

Sheffield Down Syndrome Support Group is a group of parents, carers and families of people with Down's Syndrome. The group holds regular informal meetings, and can offer support and advice, as well as organising get-togethers and trips.

Contact a Family provides support, advice and information for families with disabled children, no matter what their condition or disability. It provides a free national helpline, as well as local support through volunteer parent representatives, who are all parent carers of disabled children themselves.

Ray of Hope is a support group based in North Sheffield, for families of children with any kind of special needs. The group aims to provide peer support through regular meetings, coffee mornings and fun activities, and provides access to useful information.

S.P.L.A.Sh is a voluntary support group for adults and children affected by ADHD, including carers, siblings and friends. The group is open to all, and holds meetings to share information and provide support.

Sheffield Carers' Centre offers support to anyone in Sheffield who cares for someone who is disabled, frail or severely ill. All carers and former carers are welcome to attend activities at the Centre. Services include benefits and legal advice, and a range of support and leisure services. The Centre publishes a regular newsletter.

Sheffield Royal Society for the Blind offers a wide range of services for people of all ages who are blind or visually impaired. Services for families include a comprehensive benefits advice service, a play group, leisure clubs and events, and support groups.

Epilepsy Action is the UK’s largest epilepsy membership organisation. The Sheffield branch acts as a support group to people with epilepsy, their families and friends, as well as leading in informing and educating the public about the condition. The group holds monthly meetings for mutual support and friendly advice about epilepsy in a friendly group.

Sheffield Austistic Society is a support group run by parent carers of children with autism. The group meets regularly to provide mutual support, fun activities and information and advice.

Sheffield Deaf Children's Society is a local charity run by parents and friends of deaf and hearing impaired children living in Sheffield, Rotherham and Chesterfield, and the surrounding areas of South Yorkshire. The group gives deaf and hearing impaired infants, children and their families the chance to get together for mutual support, to exchange information, and to have fun. 

Sheffield Mencap and Gateway provides a range of services to anyone in Sheffield with a learning disability and to their families. These include regular social clubs and activites, learning opportunities and a children's performing arts group. 

ibk is a social enterprise based in Sheffield which works to promote the inclusion of disabled children, disabled young people and their families in their local communities, and to challenge a disabling world that denies their right to an ordinary existence. They can also help families find, recruit, train and supervise support workers (PAs2Go scheme) and volunteers (An extra pair of hands scheme).
